Babaluku (born Silas Balabyekkubo) is a pioneering Ugandan rapper, musician, and community activist widely regarded as one of the godfathers of Ugandan hip-hop. He is best known for founding the Luga Flow movement, a style of hip-hop performed in the native Luganda language that encourages Ugandan youth to celebrate their indigenous culture and heritage.
Career Highlights and Contributions
- Bataka Squad: He is a founding member of the legendary hip-hop group Bataka Squad, which played a critical role in the early development of the Ugandan rap scene.
- Bavubuka Foundation: Babaluku founded this organization to empower youth through the creative arts, leadership training, and community development.
- Documentary Feature: His journey and the evolution of Ugandan hip-hop were featured in the award-winning 2008 documentary, Diamonds in the Rough: A Ugandan Hip-hop Revolution.
